The artists come from the areas of Pipalyatjara and Kalka, which are located in far north western South Australia. These two communities, fourteen kilometres apart, are surrounded by the Tomkinson Ranges and are part of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

Artists in the APY lands are renowned for their vibrancy of colour and diversity of styles, as their paintings explore and depict the rich stories associated with their country. These sacred stories have been passed down to them by their ancestors, and are usually associated with their Tjukurrpa, or dreaming. As well as using secret knowledge of their Tjukurrpa to draw inspiration in their artworks, other subjects in their paintings also include birthplaces, surrounding areas that are sources of bush foods and medicine. Each food source has spiritual or ceremonial significance, and its representation in the artwork demonstrate the importance of the area.

Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present this important selection of new paintings from artists at Ninuku Arts, South Australia.

Yours sincerely

Beverly Knight
